This is Mary's dog, Nellie, picked up from the pound about 10 years ago, and she can be a vocal terror at times. In polite terms, 'Dog Aggression Issues.' But her DAI has improved by being around Molly, a lumbering, overgrown, playful, young adult, yellow lab -- as long as there are no toys on the floor.

This was the last roll of film I put through the Contarex before passing it on to someone who, hopefully, can appreciate the old camera more. It really is a mechanical marvel, but it's also a beast to use. Fun experience, something new, but I don't miss it.

There have been lots of plastic bottles on the beach lately. Must talk to those mermaids.

This old Contarex needs to be treated like a medium format camera. I'm used to quick functioning manual cameras, where you see the image and take the picture within a blink of the eye. This is more of a -- carefully compose, fiddle with the dials, move the wheel, and then take the picture -- type of camera.

By far the sturdiest, most imposing camera I have ever held in my hands. Only the Canon F-1 comes a bit close to the feeling that this camera gives.

This is the first version of the Contarex, aka Contarex I, Cyclops or 'Bullauge' in German (Bullauge = porthole, the round windows in a ship's hull), for obvious reasons. The English-speaking world called it the Bullseye, which must be a direct and incorrect translation of Bullauge and in my opinion doesn't make much sense, but everyone knows and uses the word.

This particular specimen was made towards the end of the production run of 32,000 bodies, i.e., i, 1965 or 1966. It can be identified as a late Contarex I by the 8 o'clock position of the release button, the fact that rewind lever is stowed in the 6 o'clock position and there is a slit of the insertion of identification tags at the back of the body.

I'm the one who swore never to own a Contarex, and now I have three. In particular, I pledged to avoid the original Contarex. The one with all those horribly complex and failure-prone mechanisms related to that meter.

It's not that I broke my promise. OK, no .. it is precisely that. But I can explain. Well, not exactly explain ..

What happened was that I saw a Contarex body on fleabay. Allegedly in mint condition and fully functional. Right, right. That's what they all say. The photos looked OK .. sort of .. but then, they had been shot with a cellphone.

To cut a long story short, I placed a bid. A low one. I didn't expect to win, but even if I had and even if that camera had been a piece of junk, I would still have been able to flog it to some collector who wants to put it in a showcase.

But my bid came out on top. All of €137. A few days later the camera came. And it actually is in mint condition, externally as well as internally. There is not a scratch on her, and the numerous mechanisms all run as smoothly as silk.

And now for the 'I believe in miracles' bit: The meter is working. And not just that, it is *accurate*! Normally, the selenium cell should have given up the ghost decades ago. It's unbelievable. I still can't quite grasp it.

Needless to say, I have already loaded the first roll of film and have shot about 10 pictures.

One of the prototypes of the Soviet Buran spaceplane, OK-GLI was used for piloted aerodynamic tests. To this end, it was equipped with four jet engines and a huge kerosene tank inside the cargo bay. OK-GLI flew 25 times between 1985 and 1988. It was later purchased by the museum of tecnology in Speyer and brought to Germany in 2008. You can climb up the staircase to a walkway just behind the cockpit. There is another staircase towards the aft which leads inside the fuselage behind the cargo bay.
