I live in a communal building and i know the others in the building are able to log into my Zyxel from their apartments and use the internet. I know there's a facility whereby i can put in a password so that i am the only one who can log on but i don't know how to set it up. Can anyone help?? Thanks so much! Denise in the UK. |
Riuski join:2005-12-16 Alhambra, CA | 2007-Oct-3 8:42 pm I have to assume a few things here: 1) You're using a ZyXEL P660HW. 2) The UK version of the P660HW has a similar interface as the US version. 3) You're using Windows XP. So here are the steps: 1) Click Start, Run, then type CMD. Press [Enter]. 2) In the black box that pops up (also known as the command prompt), type IPCONFIG [Enter]. 3) Check your IP address and gateway. It should be 192.168.x.y, and 192.168.x.z, respectively. 4) Type 192.168.x.z in the address bar of whatever browser you use. Press [Enter]. Use 1234 as the password and try to log in. If 1234 does not work, contact your ISP (or whoever set up the DSL modem for you) for the password. 5) You should see 3 columns on the main menu. In the middle column somewhere is Wireless. Click that. 6) One of the options is Wireless LAN or Wireless, and another should be WPA/802.1x. I'd choose WPA/802.1x, since WEP (available under the Wireless menu) is not very secure. 7) on the WPA/802.1x menu, choose Authentication Required, then choose WPA-PSK as the method/encryption. My mind is a bit hazy on what options are available, but those 2 options and the Pre-Shared key box are the only 3 you need to be concerned about. Choose a password that's 8 characters or more (letters and/or numbers), write it down, then click Apply/Save. 8) At this point, you'll have to get your wireless computers to reconnect to your wireless network and type in the pre-shared key to connect. If the UK menu looks completely different, I would just look for the options that seem similar to the ones I mentioned. |

I followed your 'idiot proof' instructions to the letter and when i tried to log on again it said that i required a password and after entering the one i had created it allowed me access to the internet. I presume that anyone trying to get access now on my wireless imternet will encounter the same thing but they won't know the password yes?? You are an absolute diamond! This has always been a problem with mine.I dropped encryption because i can never get my laptop to connect. It does only have sp1 on it because the sp2 is so big i don't have room on the 6g hard drive. any thoughts ? this is what it looks like on the 660hw-61 Zynos 3.40 (pe10) dsl firmware 04.02.01.00 |

B_DuB, Without SP2 for WinXP, you'll most likely have to stick with WEP, which is available under the Wireless LAN menu. If you want to use WPA-PSK, then you should either upgrade to SP2, or use the wireless utility that came with your wireless adapter and hope that supports WPA-PSK without SP2. | |
