I am an avid L5R RPG player. I've been playing since 1st edition was still brand new and kicking and have been playing ever since. I own all but 4 books ever printed for L5R.. 5 because I do not have the 4th edition companion book yet, but in 2 weeks that number will be 4 again..

Why is 4th so exciting to someone like me, who has a multitude of options at my disposal for roleplay? Well, it's simple. You see, with every edition, L5R became increasingly complex. They added a lot of cool stuff and concepts, but all of that fun stuff got lost in the spiderwebs of complex rules and broken combos.

'Well, go back to 1st edition, then' is what would be the most common answer to the Legend of the Five Rings Role Playing Game dilema. And believe me, I have. Many times. But 1st edition had a lot of problems (mainly balance problems) in and of itself.

So along comes 4th edition. They trimmed the fat from the steak. It still has all the fancy doo-dads and whatchums that were added over the years, to be sure. But all of the rules were slimmed down. It returned to simpler 1st edition style of rules, but with a lot of work done on the system as a whole. Their 'Play By Sheet' concept is brilliant. All of your character abilities fit into nice, neat little packages that go on your character sheet, so flipping through the book during gameplay is minimal. All the 'builds' for overpowered characters have all but been eliminated. Instead replaced by abilities that make sense to the balance of the game, as well as to the character itself. One still has the same options as in other editions as far as choosing character abilities, but their function has been altered to disallow 'Beasting.'

The book itself is gorgeous. 1st and 2nd Editions both used original artwork for the books. Which was awesome, but they were in B&W with a small color section mid book for Clan details. And they do have a charm to them with lots of amazing art. 3rd Edition subscribed to the notion that 'We have a crap ton of art from the card game.. why not use that?' And it was nice, but it was sloppy. Well, no, not sloppy. It was just a first attempt. The pages were full color and they looked good. But the 4th Edition book blows it out of the water. AND! They're using old card art more than 3rd Edition.

The final thing that blew my mind: Adobe acrobat distiller 5 free download for windows 7.

L5R CCG was unique in that it followed a storyline. It took place in a fantasy realm based loosely off of Japanese Mythology. It had a (in game) history that spanned over a thousand years. And tournaments would actually affect the outcome of some aspects of the story. It was an evolving setting that the players had a hand in creating.

1st Edition took place 2 years before the events of the very first CCG story arc. It was a time of relative peace when nothing was really going on.

2nd Edition Took place during the very first story arc, and the d20 hybrid books took place during the 4th story arc. 3rd edition was heavily steeped in the current goings on of the CCG storyline, and a lot of the rules were bogged down by what was happening. You'd see a lot of phrases such as 'If [X Plotline] hasn't happened yet, then the rules function this way..' It was fine when a story specific book was published, that was based around that arc's timeline specifically. But when other splat books appeared and were bogged down by the same things? It was harder, as a GM, to alter the rules for the time period in Rokugan's history that I wished to play in.

4th is timeline free. There is a history section that does explain things up to the current story arc, but none of the rules are tied to it. I can just as easily plop my game 400 years ago as I can in any other era of history.

Edit: Because I'm a giant giant whore I just ordered 'Enemies of the Empire.' Since Amazon had 0 in stock, it was ordered from a seller and will be here the beginning of December :/ FML haha
